The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering operates a continuous employment process that begins several months prior to the start date of a placement. Students accepted into the Co-operative Internship Program (CIP) are able to start viewing postings and applying for jobs in November of each year for positions starting between May and August of the following year. The majority of students begin internship in May, please note there are no January placements. For more information on posting jobs please contact email@example.com.
The requirements for an acceptable internship position are:
Job must be “engineering related.”
Job must be “discipline related.”
Job should involve working with engineers.
Job must be 8, 12 or 16 consecutive months with the same company.
Student must be paid.
An internship position is considered “engineering related” if it provides the student with:
An opportunity to gain understanding of and/or personal involvement in the practical application of engineering, and/or
Exposure to an environment of engineering which encourages the development of professional responsibility, maturity and judgment.
A job is considered “discipline related” if it meets the above criteria and is related to the student’s own discipline within engineering.
As per the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering guidelines please note the following: An intern is expected to work with the industrial partner for 8, 12 or 16 consecutive months as specified in the internship contract with the industry partner. If there are circumstances that impact on a student’s work performance the student must discuss the situation with their immediate supervisor/ employer and the Internship Coordinator and attempt to resolve the problems before terminating their employment.
While on internship, the student is governed by that employer's employment policies, practices, procedures, dress code, and/or standards of conduct. To avoid any misunderstanding, it is recommended that the student obtain clarification regarding such matters from their supervisor/employer when they begin their internship.
An intern is NOT permitted to take any day school courses during the semester of a placement.
Credit will not be given for a placement during which time the student has also taken day school courses.
Posting an Internship Position In order to post an internship opportunity, industry partners can contact the CIP Assistant, firstname.lastname@example.org. Internship positions are posted on the Department CIP Job Board, where pre-qualified students have exclusive access.
Collecting Applications The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering allows you to choose your application collection method.
Students can apply through your website or through the Department.
If you choose the latter, the CIP Assistant will collect all applications and send to you as a PDF on the position close date.
Arranging Interviews and Presenting Job Offers Interviews and job offers are coordinated through the CIP Assistant to ensure that students being considered for positions are eligible and available to complete an internship work term. In addition, employers who hire students through our CIP program may be eligible for an Ontario Co-operative Education Tax Credit.
Interview Coordination Process:
Submit your interview request via email to the CIP Assistant, email@example.com using the Interview Request form.
The CIP Assistant will verify students’ eligibility and confirm interviews with the employer within 1 to 2
Interviews can be conducted at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering or at the company’s location.
Job Offer Coordination:
Submit the internship job offer details via firstname.lastname@example.org to the CIP Assistant.
The offer details include: student name, position being offered, start/end date and salary.
The CIP Assistant will extend the offer to the student and communicate the student's decision to the employer within 2 business days.
